Clean Candles are the Way to Go!

At Cotton and Wax, our candle formula is very simple, zinc free cotton wick, 100% domestically grown soy wax, and fragrance oil. That’s it! No dyes, no soy blends, no additives or phthalates.

Most candles are made with paraffin wax or you’ll see them say soy blend. Buyer beware! Paraffin is the end-product of petroleum and contains carcinogenic compounds. This is not a clean burning candle. Instead you are breathing in soot that can contaminate ventilation ductwork in your home, as well as add toxic carcinogens into the air. Soy blends are typically blended with paraffin or additives. To ensure a clean burn, check the label to make sure you're buying a 100% soy candle. 

So what’s the big deal about soy? Soy candles are better for you, your pets, and for the environment. Soy wax is non-toxic and burns cleaner than paraffin, with no petrol-carbon soot. Since soybeans are vegetables, soy wax is naturally biodegradable, vegan, and a renewable resource. Soy candles burn slower and cooler, giving them a longer life-span than paraffin candles. Since soy wax is natural the top of the candle doesn’t cool smooth after being lit. Paraffin or soy blend candles use additives to create a smooth top after burning. We love that our candles are perfectly imperfect because it just means we didn’t add anything extra to make them burn unclean.

All our fragrances are phthalate free. Phthalates are used to dissolve raw materials and can be found in perfume, hairspray, shampoo, etc. All you need to do is Google phthalates to see how bad they are for you. While there are no regulations against phthalates, we decided to only use phthalate free fragrance oils in our candles.
